Oakland, is this acceptable to you? If the homeless were held accountable for this crap, things might change. Are the rest of us allowed to do this?

What is the deal?! I have called about this several times, left messages, etc. when I spoke to the city they said that supervisor Dexter English said there was no issue at this location. I called and left a message with Dexter English and was never contacted back. He obviously never looked into the issue because this has been a growing encampment since November. What's going on here? I have a business located here and clients that see this every time they come to our shop.

The talk has been, that mayor Libby is allowing these encampments, supposedly due to El Nino, but that's over. She needs to stand up to the homeless advocates, clean up this city or quit. How is this city allowed to continue to look like a dump. There's something going on. Mr English is in denial or like the rest, doesn't get that this affects all of us. If there isn't an issue at this location, someone is controlling the homeless issue and it's not looking good

To be honest, I completely sympathize with homeless folks needing a place to stay safe, dry, etc. I actually have a relationship with the guy who lives here and agree with a to of what homeless advocates are fighting for. The problem isn't that he lives across the street from my business - it's the huge mounds of stinking trash and the 4 parking spaces that are now occupied by him and now his friends that he has invited to stay in their cars around his encampment. Now my clients have to park down the street or around the block and have to walk past a huge garbage pile to come to my place of business. The guy who lives here has been in our neighborhood for along time and I don't want to see him shuffled along out of site - all I want is his 30-40 trash cans and miscellaneous piles to be cleaned up a little. 2-3 cans and a shopping cart is a lot different than 1/4 of the block filled with garbage blocking the sidewalk and spilling into the street. Jeez. I don't think that's unreasonable. I've talked with the guy several times and he just won't reduce his piles. Someone from the city needs to take care of this.

I see your point also. If Oakland is going to allow these encampments there somehow needs to be weekly cleanups so it stays under control. Allowing it to get to this point is unacceptable. They know where these huge encampments are, but instead they want the public to keep up with all this garbage.

That's the way I feel too. Allowing this much garbage to pile up is completely unacceptable. I've tried to avoid asking the city to get involved but dealing directly with the homeless guy hasn't worked. This has been a growing pile for over 7 months now. I think it is ridiculous that as a business owner I have to pay over $430/month for trash service but this guy gets to litter my entire block for months without any city employee getting involved. No wonder people illegally dump garbage and toxins on the street.
